Summary

Kings become outcasts and lovers become foes in The Faithless Hawk, the thrilling sequel to Margaret Owen's The Merciful Crow

As the new chieftain of the Crows, Fie knows better than to expect a royal to keep his word。 Still she’s hopeful that Prince Jasimir will fulfill his oath to protect her fellow Crows。 But then black smoke fills the sky, signaling the death of King Surimir and the beginning of Queen Rhusana's merciless bid for the throne。

With the witch queen using the deadly plague to unite the nation of Sabor against Crows—and add numbers to her monstrous army—Fie and her band are forced to go into hiding, leaving the country to be ravaged by the plague。 However, they’re all running out of time before the Crows starve in exile and Sabor is lost forever。

A desperate Fie calls on old allies to help take Rhusana down from within her own walls。 But inside the royal palace, the only difference between a conqueror and a thief is an army。 To survive, Fie must unravel not only Rhusana’s plot, but ancient secrets of the Crows—secrets that could save her people, or set the world ablaze。

Great YAI don’t know if I’ve gotten worse at catching the twists and turns typical of YA novels, but I really did have a few surprises in this book! It’s a fabulous read, and I am again struck by the excellent world building, and the believable relationships! Good work and will look forward to reading more from this author。

I was a little leery at the start of this because I wasn't sure it'd live up to the first one, but boy, did it ever! So, so good。 Hit all the right emotional notes。 I was a little leery at the start of this because I wasn't sure it'd live up to the first one, but boy, did it ever! Major spoilers will be hidden! It took me a bit to really get into this, which is why I docked off one star, but once I was done with part one I couldn’t put this down。 Fie’s journey has been incredible。 She’s faced discrimination and hardships from all sides。 She had to leave her love and perform her duty as the chief of her tribe。 And still, the queen just won’t leave her alone。 For some reason Rhusana is determined to watch the Crows burn, and she will do whatever it takes to get there。 Even if it means watching Sabor burn。 And so, it’s left up to Fie to infiltrate the palace and stop it all because somehow she is tangled up in all of this, and it’s not just because she’s friends with Jasimir and Tavin’s love。I’m sure if you made it to this book you know that this duology isn’t about action。 There are no epic battle scenes or sword fights。 This is a book filled with subterfuge and political intrigue。 This is a book with spies and a plan to undermine an unfit, and quite frankly crazy, ruler。 We learn that Fie makes for an absolutely terrible spy lmao。 She lets her emotions get the best of her, and while for the most part it works in her favor, there are many a close call while she blunders through court。 Poor Khoda is hella tired of her ass going off plan and doing her own thing。 Her and Jasimir lol。 They’re trying their damndest to make sure Rhusana isn’t coronated and it’s hard work out-manipulating a master of manipulation。 Just like Khoda says though, Rhusana has a habit of underestimating her enemies and it works out greatly in their favor。 Weirdly enough, Barf and a few other cats are a great help。 I ain’t complaining though。 Cats are awesome and it’s hella cute how everyone ends up with their own cat hehe。 I also wanna give major props to Owen for the well-written romance。 There is absolutely nothing cheesy or cliche about Fie and Tavin。 Ok that’s an exaggeration, there’s a lil bit of cliche。 (view spoiler)[The whole time Fie thought Tavin had betrayed them and hated herself for still loving him was full of angst。 It’s also a bit of a YA cliche。 Still, I knew that Tavin had known this whole time that Niemi was Fie。 I also knew that he hadn’t betrayed them and surrendered so he could help from the inside。 What I didn’t expect was Khoda being the one that told him to sacrifice himself to Rhusana。 Master spy indeed。 (hide spoiler)] Their love for one another reminded me of my bf。 It made me miss him and yearn for him even though I had last seen him only yesterday。 It’s filled with genuine, pure passion。 They’ve been through so much together and just when they were reunited everything went to shit。 Their yearning was palpable and I appreciated how Owen allowed Fie to truly feel and release her grief and pain。 Many writers think that a strong female protagonist means she can’t show her emotions and admit she’s in love。 That they can’t even think about it because there are more important things to do。 Fie’s feelings are right below the surface though。 She even opens herself up to those she cares about and tells them of her struggle and they help her through it。 Her emotions even get her into trouble a few times, but it’s healthier to let those feelings out and allow yourself to love。 Also happy for Jasimir for finding a bit of love and happiness in a certain someone。 (view spoiler)[As soon as Khoda said he was gay I shipped him with Jas lol。 My man was so done with him, but was crushing on him at the same time。 The fact that they had a bit of a tryst while trying to save the cats killed me lmao。 When Tavin asked him to rate it on a scale of one to window seat I lost it。 Owen left it a bit open-ended with them, but I’d like to imagine that Khoda eventually went back to be his spymaster and they get together once Jas steps down。 (hide spoiler)]The ending did not come as a surprise to me。 I wasn’t sure of how it would happen, but I knew it would happen。 I did not expect Fie’s true identity though, so props to Owen for that。 (view spoiler)[I had my suspicions about the Crow’s true Birthright。 I had a feeling the plague was never meant to be such a gruesome end for all people。 The fact that they could save anyone they saw fit in exchange for them becoming a Crow was fitting。 Rhusana dies a gruesome death at the hand of her tiger and I fucking loved it。 That is how you kill an evil queen。 The GoT writers could learn a thing or two from Owen since Cersei’s death was utter bullshit。 I wanted Arya to stab her, not have her crushed by rocks with Jamie。 I’m getting off topic though lmao。 Fie and Tavi get their happy ending。 They’re both Crows and they’ll be spending the rest of their lives traveling together, exactly as they wished。 Fie says fuck not to the crown and her oath is finally fulfilled。 Everyone is happy! Well, except the Oleander Gentry and maybe all of the spiteful Peacocks and who knows who else that won’t be happy about the new way of things。 I’m sure Jas will do a fine job of cleaning that up。 It's not a perfect ending。 There's a lot of work to be done to dismantle the discrimination the Crows have faced for so long。 They'll do it though。 In the meantime, Fie and the others have the means to protect themselves and those they love。 (hide spoiler)] Overall I enjoyed this thoroughly。 Once they got to the palace I couldn’t put this down。 This is such a unique world that Owen has built with a truly creative magic system。 Owen knows how to tug at your heart strings and keep you guessing when it comes to what kind of trouble Fie will get into lol。 Is it the best YA fantasy I’ve ever read? No, but it’s wholly unique and diverse to boot。 I picked this up because I was a lil tired of reading fantasy books with just yt people。 I needed a change of pace and I got it。 Let me end this review with a few more quotes that caught my eye。"A storm squatted on their horizon。 All she could do was try to keep them out of it。""We all know the storm's coming; only a fool waits for the lightning to tell them to find shelter。" - Little Witness "If the fear of losing her had overthrown him, she would be the fire and flood that drove it out。""I'll never doubt that boy loves you, Fie。 But loving someone doesn't make us choose right, for us or for them。" - Wretch "The only difference between a conqueror and a thief is an army。" - Khoda 。。。more

This was a good solid sequel and wrap-up to the duology。 I found the writing to be much improved from the first。 Sadly, the plot didn't hold as much interest for me。 I think if political intrigue wanted to be incorporated it should have been done earlier。 The parts of the court seemed rushed。 I think the biggest complaint is that certain elements which are revealed in this book should've been foreshadowed or hinted at in the first one。 It would have helped it seem more cohesive and last deus ex This was a good solid sequel and wrap-up to the duology。 I found the writing to be much improved from the first。 Sadly, the plot didn't hold as much interest for me。 I think if political intrigue wanted to be incorporated it should have been done earlier。 The parts of the court seemed rushed。 I think the biggest complaint is that certain elements which are revealed in this book should've been foreshadowed or hinted at in the first one。 It would have helped it seem more cohesive and last deus ex machina。 I also found that some of the rules of the magic changed or happened to be discovered right when they needed them。Overall, this is a solid book。 And the serious is enjoyable。 。。。more
